Monki See is a Language enrichment program geared for children ages 3 months and older. Using music, poetry, puppets and real-life images these 30-minute DVDs and books are fun and entertaining and have the added benefit of teaching your child early skills including body parts, letters, colors, shapes and even reading.
As a part of the TOS Crew I had the opportunity to review the MonkiSee DVD Baby’s First Words as well as the book: Know Your Monkey. The MonkiSee DVDs normally sales for $24.95, but is on sale right now for $19.95. The MonkiSee books normally sales for $11.95, but is currently on sale for $9.95. While you can purchase any of the DVDs or books individually, they are also sold as part of the baby reading kit.
While I have to start out by saying my girls (1 & 2 years old) enjoyed the DVD, and we watched it almost every school-day for the past couple of weeks, in the time that we’ve watched it, they did not learn how to read any words. I’m not saying that they wouldn’t over time, I’m just saying we haven’t seen it yet :)
I’m fairly sure this is to be expected, this is a quote from their website:
“The MonkiSee Reading Program has been specifically designed to teach babies to read in a way that expands their understanding of their surroundings. While some programs teach babies to read close to 200 words in a 7-month period, the Monki See Reading Program crushes the competition by teaching your baby to read over 800 words.”
However, the video was a delight. Lexie (2 1/2) watched the entire thing bouncing and entertained the entire time, Audrey (1 year old) would watch a little here and there as she wondered around the room.
Neither was as interested in the book as they were the movie, though they would sit through it and go through some motions with us.
This was an enjoyable product for our family, though I can’t speak for it’s reading effectiveness, Lexie did enjoy practicing her body parts and trying to get Audrey to participate as well.
